Downes Semillon 2016

Made in extremely limited quantities this is a gorgeous example for the varietal, displaying concentration without weight. The nose offers up a slight quinine quality underpinning to the citrus, lime zest tones with a light note of musk and spice adding intrigue. Beautifully balanced, the palate is round on entry with good breadth with mineral notes infused into the spicy, citrus flavors, cut with nice acidity that gives it freshness and drive. Semillon’s natural propensity for viscosity is kept in check, allowing the wine to offer richness while finishing dry and smooth. Showcasing noted fruit intensity with good palate cling and length on the finish, this is lovely stuff, almost reminding of well made white Bordeaux. Showing well now, this should drink beautifully over the next 2-3 years.
