Sherwood Estate was founded by Dayne and Jill Sherwood, with the first vines being planted in 1987 and first wines made in 1990. Since this time, Dayne and Jill have seen production dramatically increase each year to the point where they are now one of the largest Waipara wineries. After making wine from a number of different grape varieties over a number of years, Sherwood Estate now specializes in Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling, believing that Waipara soils and conditions are ideally suited to these varietals.
Sherwood Estate is recognized as one of the most innovative and internationally successful of New Zealand’s niche winemakers.Their wines are produced from company-owned vineyards and from long-term, contracted vineyards. They use a blend of traditional winemaking techniques combined with some of the most modern and technologically advanced winemaking equipment available, seen as the key to contemporary winemaking.

Dayne Sherwood began purchasing vineyards over twenty years ago. When you consider the New Zealand wine industry is only slightly older, it gives you an idea of the planning that is has gone into making Sherwood and Zenith Vineyards some of the best value wines New Zealand has to offer. With the phenomenal success of the maiden 1999 vintage, Zenith Vineyards has raised the bar for the quality/value relationship of New Zealand Pinot Noir. Pinot Noir is the most expensive grape in New Zealand, outdoing the already high price of their legendary Sauvignon Blancs. With the rapidly escalating prices from other producers in the region, the value of their Zenith Pinot, Reserve Pinot, and Sauvignon Blanc continue to amaze us.

Marlborough, where the grapes for Zenith wines are grown, is the largest of New Zealand’s wine growing regions. The silty, fertile alluvial soils and long, cool ripening conditions in the South Island regions of Marlborough and Nelson produce vibrant, fruit-focused Pinot Noir with strong cherry and plum flavors. These soil types, abundant sunshine, long autumns and crisp, cool winters prove to be the ingredients needed to produce world class wines. Although it is the Sauvignon Blanc that is the crown of Marlborough, acclaimed as among the best in the world, the quality of New Zealand’s Pinot Noir has come an astonishingly long way in the past twenty years. This continuous improvement shows no sign of abating.
The rewards are clearly evident from the mounting acclaim for New Zealand Pinot Noir throughout the world.
