Water Wheel

Water Wheel Memsie 'Homestead' Red 2008

88 pts Robert Parker Jr.’s The Wine Avocate - Medium-bodied, savory, with good depth and concentration.

Tasting Notes

5/5/10
Fitting into the Water Wheel philosophy of offering bang for the buck, the just released 2008 Memsie ‘Homestead red blend, is another terrific bottle of wine for the money and represents excellent value. Predominantly Shiraz with smattering of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon rounding things out, this offers up noted depth to its black currant, plum and black raspberry flavors with beautifully integrated tannins bringing it to a smooth finish. Not only delicious, with its engaging plump fruit, the over all quality and value again proves that the crew at Water Wheel continue to offer some of the best deals on reds coming out of Australia.

Food Accompaniments

It is ready for immediate consumption and would be an ideal match for rich pasta dishes, BBQs and game.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

88 pts Robert Parker Jr.’s The Wine Avocate (JM)
Deep crimson-colored, it exhibits aromas of smoked game, bacon, and blueberry. Medium-bodied, savory, with good depth and concentration, this medium-long wine will provide pleasure over the next 4 years.

87 pts Stephen Tanzers International Wine Cellar (JR)
Deep ruby color. Brooding aromas of cherry and dark berries, with notes of licorice and bitter chocolate. Supple tannins add support to the chewy dark fruit flavors and a note of cracked pepper adds bite. Very young, a tad tough and slow to unravel; this needs air or a few more months of bottle aging.

Winemaker Notes

During fermentation the cap was plunged and pumped over three times daily. After pressing in a Membrane press and completion of Malolactic Fermentation, a percentage of the wine under went Micro Oxygenation with the balance of the wine spending time in American Oak Hogsheads. Following Albumen and Bentonite finings the wine is Earth filtered and then Sterile filtered to bottle.
Soil is deep ripped before planting. Vines are hedged trellised, exposing the grapes to the sun to achieve maximum ripeness. All vines are irrigated from the nearby Loddon river with ground level mini sprays. Red wine grapes are planted on heavy clay soil with pieces of limestone present in the soil.
